The Cameron Brown Show
Inside the Life of a North Korean Tour Guide | Episode 53
In this episode of The Cameron Brown Show, I sit down with Zoe Stephens — a North Korean tour guide, ultra-runner, polyglot, and PhD researcher from Liverpool, UK, who’s on a mission to visit every country in the world and challenge the narratives we’ve been told.
After first visiting North Korea in 2016 to see beyond the headlines, Zoe discovered a reality far different from what most people imagine. That trip changed the course of her life, leading her to begin guiding tours inside one of the world’s most secretive nations — and eventually to other complex destinations including Afghanistan, Syria, and beyond.
As Zoe says: “The media controls what we see, how often we see it, and how we should feel about it. The result? A population with strong opinions on places they’ve never even visited.”
We talk about what it’s really like inside North Korea, the responsibility of travelers to seek truth, and why questioning the stories we’re told might be the key to seeing the world as it truly is.
